Under the Canada Marine Act, the Vancouver Port Authority (VPA) is responsible for the administration, management and control of the Port of Vancouver. In exercising its mandate, VPA intends that development meets appropriate standards and does not have a net adverse effect on the lands and waters under its jurisdiction. VPA’s property agreements also require consent from VPA prior to undertaking any construction projects or activities that may have impacts on its property. To effectively manage these responsibilities, VPA administers an integrated project and environmental review process.
VPA’s Project Review Process and Environmental Appraisal Procedure apply to all construction, activities and demolition on land, water and air space administered by VPA including all property leased or licensed to other parties. Combined, these processes ensure all developments meet applicable standards, minimize environmental impacts and support VPA’s land use and environmental objectives.
VPA’s proprietary jurisdiction includes the water, sea bed and over 460 hectares of land in Burrard Inlet east of the First Narrows. VPA also controls the port facility at Roberts Bank and navigation in the area shown on the accompanying map.
